About

I started powerlifting in 1992 (17 years old) at Terry Morris’s Gym in Southampton, England.  I only trained there for about 4 months before I started full time work and was just too tired to go to the gym.  Once I got over the shock of work I went back to a gym called The Fort Gym.  There, I met a couple of powerlifters who took me under their wings.  My first competition was a Divisional.  I was 105kg and did 520 total.  Today you would say it was raw, back then I just had no kit.

The total got me an invite to the junior British so I bought some kit and went along.  I placed 2nd with a 620 total.  That total got me an invite to the under 23 British.  I moved up from 110 to 125 and came first with a 637.5 total and an invite to train with the junior British team. I was then invited to the junior Europeans in Belgium after that I was hooked on powerlifting.

Before I left the juniors ranks I left my mark, achieving top 3 places from 1994 -1997 at European and World Championships.  I then moved up into the seniors in 1998 and I was invited onto the senior team.  I found it hard to come from being a front runner to fight to be in the top 8, but that soon changed.

In the Europeans I have had some success:

  • 2000 2nd
  • 2002 3rd
  • 2006 1st
  • 2007 3rd

In the world championships I have found it a lot harder.  I have some individual medals, but a top 3 place has yet to come.

In 2009 I moved up to the 125+ class

My BP’s to Date September 2009:

Squat 420kg

Bench 305kg

Deadlift 365kg

Total 1065kg

My goal is to become world champion, but in the world of powerlifting it is not an easy thing to achieve.

November 2009 India IPF World Powerlifting Championships

I achieved my dream and got gold in the 125+ class and became the 2009 world Powerlifting Champion

Next year I intend to defend my title.
